LAHORE: Prisons Department would convert Ghazi Ilm Din’s and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s (ZAB) barracks into a mosque and library respectively, said Prisons Minister Abdul Ghafoor Mayo on Thursday.
A month ago, he said, the government had decided to name the barracks of Mianwali Jail and Kot Lakhpat Jail after personalities such as Ilm Din and Bhutto. He said the barrack in which Bhutto was detained was named Shaheed Bhutto Barrack and that of Ilm Din was named Ghazi Ilm Din Shaheed Barrack. He said, “Bhutto Barrack is a bit secluded from other barracks, so it will be easy for us to convert it into a library.”
He said hundreds of books containing information on Islam, history of Pakistan, politics and culture would be put in the library. He said Ilm Din was executed for murdering a blasphemer Hindu writer, Rajpal in 1926. He said the government would convert Ilm Din’s barrack in a mosque after its renovation.
Jail Superintendent Shehram Khan said famous people, including former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Sheikh Rasheed, and Javed Hashmi had been jailed. He said, “Jamaat-e-Islami founder Sheikh Maudoodi, renown poets Khawaja Altaf Hussain Hali and Faiz Ahmed Faiz were also jailed here.” He said Maudoodi wrote Tafheemul Quran, Javed Hashmi wrote Haan Mein Ghaddar Hoon, PM Yousuf Gilani wrote Chah Yousuf Say Sada during their stay at the jail.
